
Make things, friends & memories!
Have your child spend their 2022-2023 Winter Break meeting new friends & learning tech skills at The Maker Bean Cafe at 1052 Bloor St. West! Using tools such as laser cutters, 3D printers & wood-working tools, and with 1 laptop per child, your children will create something straight out of their imaginations!
Winter Break 2022-2023 includes these dates (activity for each day are below):
- Dec 27, 28, 29, 30
- Jan 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Each day has a different theme, so you can sign your child up for multiple camps, and they won’t repeat the same activity. Themes for each day are described below.
For kids 6-12 years old, both experienced & new makers alike.
Kids also head outdoors for at least 1.5 hours per day to Dufferin Grove or Dovercourt Parks (5-minute walks from The Maker Bean) for active games & fresh air. Please ensure your kids are dressed for outdoor time during the winter.

Camps run 9 AM – 4 PM daily, drop off from 8:50 AM, pick up promptly at 4 PM
December 27: LED Light Up Snowforts & Custom Flag
In the morning, we’ll build tiny light-up snowforts – putting together the wooden framework, adding cotton “snow”, and wiring the LED circuits. In the afternoon, we’ll design and lasercut custom flags for our forts!
December 28: Minecraft + Making
Kids will have a group goal to achieve in a customized, private Minecraft world, as well as build something "in real life" right out of the Minecraft world using a mix of laser cutting, 3D printing & wood working!
December 29: Laser Cut Animal Creations
We’ll make lasercut felt stuffed animals! In the morning, we’ll prototype our stuffies on paper, then translate our creations into printable shapes on Adobe Illustrator. In the afternoon, we’ll lasercut our critters, sew them together, and add other decorations!
December 30: Motorized Walking WalrusBot & Maple Snow Candy Making
Our main activity of the day is building a trundling felt WalrusBot: putting together the body, connecting the motor circuits, and making sure our WalrusBot walks properly. In the second half of the afternoon, we’ll get into the hands-on science of maple snow candy (all “snow” made from clean ice).
January 2: Wood Block Paint Stamp + LED Light Up Winter Cabin
In the morning, we’ll build and decorate a cozy, light-up winter cabin. In the afternoon, we’ll design and laser-cut custom wood block paint stamps.
January 3: Minecraft + Making
Kids will have a group goal to achieve in a customized, private Minecraft world, as well as build something "in real life" right out of the Minecraft world using a mix of laser cutting, 3D printing & wood working!
January 4: 3D Printed Snowglobe Toppers + Coding Adventure Games
In the morning, we’ll design custom snowglobe toppers to be 3D printed, then put together and decorate the snowglobes they’ll go in. In the afternoon, we’ll run an Hour of Code “lesson”: teaching kids to code through adventure games! Note: You’ll be able to pick up your maker’s snowglobe next week (the week of January 9th)!
January 5: Build a Hopping PenguinBot + 3D Printed Snowflakes
In the morning, we’ll put together a hopping, propeller-powered Penguinbot. In the afternoon, we’ll use TinkerCAD to design custom snowflakes! Note: You’ll be able to pick up your maker’s snowflake next week (the week of January 9th)!
January 6: Minecraft + Making
