Themes for Jan 2026 weekly camp sessions:

Week 1: 3D Printed Bag Tags and Keychains

It’s the first week back at Maker Bean Camp of 2026 and we’re kicking things off with custom 3D printed keychains! Campers will get a crash course in TinkerCAD, a 3D modeling software for beginners and kids, then design their own keychains! We’ll finish off our designs by adding a loop to attach our 3D prints to our back packs or house keys! Kids will receive their 3D printed creations at the end of next week’s camp!

Week 2: Urban Animal Plushies

Today campers will sew plushies inspired by Toronto’s wildlife. We’ll learn to sew little raccoons, foxes and skunks out of laser cut felt pieces, then we’ll decorate our plushies and create little environments for them with hand-cut felt pieces, wood scraps and other craft supplies!

Week 3: DIY Hot Wheels

Today campers will learn about kinetic energy by creating a car powered by rubber bands. We’ll start by building the frames of our cars with laser cut pieces and decorating them with markers and craft supplies before installing our rubber bands and wheels! Then we’ll race our cars to see who can drive the fastest!

Week 4: Laser Cut Paper Lanterns (Design)

To celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year, campers will make their own paper lanterns. Today we’ll work on the design portion of the activity with Adobe Illustrator. Campers will find images online and learn how to turn them into paper cutouts on the sides of their lanterns. Campers will receive their customized paper lantern kits next week to assemble!

Week 5: Laser Cut Paper Lanterns (Assembly)

Today campers will receive their customized paper pieces and assemble them into lanterns to celebrate Lunar New Year. We’ll start by wiring up an LED to make our lanterns glow, then we’ll line the inside of our lanterns with tissue paper to diffuse our lights. Finally we’ll fold our customized paper lanterns together and add decorations and handles to carry or hang them up!

Week 6: Code  a Cupid Game with Scratch

Love is in the air at The Maker Bean! Today campers will code a cupid-themed game with Scratch, a drag-and-drop coding platform for beginners and kids! We’ll draw our cupid’s arrow and code it to fire at moving targets! Then we’ll have some time to swap computers and all play each other's games!

Week 7: LED Claw Machine

Today campers will build mini models of claw machines! We’ll start by wiring up our LEDs to make our claw machines light up just like the ones in the arcade! Then we’ll assemble our claw machines with laser cut pieces and make some tiny plushies out of pom poms and pipe cleaners to put inside. We’ll finish up by installing our LEDs and add some final touches to complete our claw machines!
